Writer/Dir: Ki-duk Kim (Bin-jip / 3-Iron, Hae anseon / The Coast Guard)
Cast: Yeong-su Oh, Ki-duk Kim, Young-min Kim, Yeo-jin Ha, Jae-kyeong Seo
South Korea/Germany, 2003
Seen: February 2, 2008 thanks to the Toronto Public Library
Reason to see: critical acclaim
It's not very often I see a film and immediately want to see everything the director has done, and this is one of those times. Gentle pacing paired with stunning visuals bring this film to be more than just a simple viewing experience but an experience in it of itself. A personal journey that isn't always easy to watch but always feels like it is getting closer and closer to the truth. This is a gem of a film.

La Vie en Rose / Ma Mome
Dir: Olivier Dahan (Crimson Rivers 2, Ghost River)
Cast: Marion Cotillard, Sylvie Testud, Pascal Greggory, Jean-Pierre Martins
France/UK/Czech Republic, 2007
Seen: February 5, 2008 on Rogers Direct
Reason to see: The clip shown at the Golden Globes captivated me
I went into seeing this film knowing almost nothing about the life story of Edith Piaf on which it is based, and I think you can get a lot from it without foreknowledge of her life. The strongest element of the film is the performance by Marion Cotillard, whom shows such a range of acting skills it's hard to believe it was all one person. There has been many music biopics in the past few years and it is understandable considering what interesting, although hard, lives that they tend to lead and this film is no different. Having talent by the bucketload, but not necessary luck we watch with hearts on our sleeves and fingers crossed as the film plays though. A fascinating portrait of a phenomenal woman.
My one reservation was that the songs were not subtitled, and my French is nowhere near being able to understand them. I'm sure they were picked to be played at poignant moments, but the meanings had to be conveyed by intuition rather than understanding so that was a bit of a challenge.
Shannon's Overall View:
I enjoyed it
I'd watch it again (especially if there were subtitles during the songs!)
I'd recommend it to music fans

The Lookout
Writer/Dir: Scott Frank - directorial debut
Cast: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jeff Daniels, Matthew Goode, Isla Fisher, Laura Vandervoort
USA, 2007
Seen: February 9th, 2008 on TMN
Reason to see: This film seemed to get good buzz, and after watching Brick, I think Joseph Gordon-Levitt is one to watch.
I will admit this film wasn't quite what I expected, going in I thought it would be just another crime/heist movie. Although that is the setting I don't necessarily think that is the message . Are you going to accept the life that was dealt to you, or strive for more? Whose opinion will you take to heart? Who are really your friends, and what would you do or not do for them. I think these are much more interesting questions that a simple heist film would not normally go into. Loyalty is a common them in them for sure, but this brings something more. One thing it certainly brings is good performances from Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jeff Daniels and Matthew Goode.

It surprized me

Them!
Dir: Gordon Douglas (Stagecoach, Young at Heart)
Cast: James Whitmore, Edmund Gwenn, Joan Weldon, James Arness, Onslow Stevens
USA, 1954
Seen: February 2, 2008 on TCM
Reason to see: Classic monster movie fun!
I was impressed with this film. Expecting only a fun film, and there was so much more. Successful creation of tension that was almost Hitchcock like. A solid story backed by great characters, including a woman scientist which rocks considering it was released in 1954. And of course, there were monsters which is always fun! As a side note, I was surprized how many themes and ideas in the film that have popped up in other films including: Alien, Aliens, Men in Black and The Host / Gwoemul.

The BAFTA's sure spread the love this year with many films getting just one win. The sweeper is La Vie en Rose with 4 awards, followed by No Country for Old Men with 3 and then the Atonement and The Bourne Ultimatum with 2 each. Film Fan Fridays for Friday February 8, 2008!
Hello Film Fans and Fanatics!
Welcome to Film Fan Fridays for Friday February 8, 2008! This is almost a double issue considering in addition to the films being released today, we also have numerous releases for next Thursday February 14th so that all the lovebirds will have something to watch (or ignore) if they chooose to cuddle in the theatre on Valentine's day.
Starting today we have six films to choose from and with that there is an even split of three limited releases and three wide releases. Two of the limited releases are Canadian and both are heavyweights. First up is Up the Yangtze, a documentary focused on the affect of the Three Gorges Dam and I am most certainly going to see this one, it looks amazing. Our second Canadian film if Normal, a drama by Carl Bessai exploring grief with powerful performances with a cast including Carrie-Anne Moss, Callum Keith Rennie and Kevin Zegers. The third limited release is Vince Vaughn's Wild West Comedy Show, a documentary that follows a comedy troupe for 30 shows in 30 days.
Wide releases this week are all comedies of one kind or another, starting with Fool's Gold, the romantic-comedy-adventure film which preview did not impress me at all but Andy Tennant is directing and he did bring us Hitch and Sweet Home Alabama, both of which were quite charming. Next up is In Bruges, a crime-comedy of hitmen on vacation but we all know hitmen are never really on vacation, are they? Last up is Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins, the latest Martin Lawrence comedy which I could barely make it through the trailer. Slapstick, physical comedy and many "Oh no you didn't!" moments will be present.
Just before next week's releases we have a slew of wide releases on Valentine's Day. It is a surprize that none appear to be full-on romances. Definitely, Maybe is the closest as a drama focusing on a father/daughter relationship and reminiscing of past loves. It is followed by outr second dance film of the year Step Up 2 the Streets which has almost no recognizable connection to the original Step Up, but I will see nonetheless because, yes, it is a dance film. Next up is Jumper, which looks promising to be a fun spin on action style films, and the last of the Valentine's Day release is the kid's adventure flick The Spiderwick Chronicles.
If that isn't enough, award's season is still in full effect, the BAFTA's (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) will be held this Sunday February 10th, 2008.
Have a great week & a Happy Valentine's Day!

Film Homework: 2008
Every year I seem to be faced with a few moments of hesitation to see films because they are a book to film adaptation when I've not read the book, or sequels/remakes where I've not seen (or it's been a long time since I've seen) the original.
This year, I am planning a pre-emptive strike! I'm planning my books to read and films to revisit well ahead the time to no longer will I be faced with those "I want to see that but..." moments. Here are is my plan so far.
New Film: The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
Homework: Prince Caspian: Return to Narnia by C.S. Lewis *
Estimated release date: May 16, 2008
I loved the first Narnia film, and hope to enjoy the second just as much. I only read the first book as a child so hoping to enjoy the series as it continues.
New Film: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
Film Series: Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Estimated Release Date: May 22, 2008
I think I might make a triple-bill weekend to get ready for this one. These films are by no means personal classics so re-watching is a must to get on the up-and-up for the Crystal Skull. My strongest memory of them was seeing Temple of Doom for my brother's birthday and that it really scared me, particularly one of the dinner scenes. After reading parental advisory link (contains spoilers) on imdb, it's pretty surprizing it was PG here. I'm sure now I'll be able to take it, or at least know when to cover my eyes.
New Film: The Road
Book: The Road by Cormac McCarthy *
Estimated release date: 2008
I have a friend whom said she read this all in one go at an airport, talk about the sign of a good book. After discussing it more, I decided I wanted to read it. At the time I had no idea it was the same author of "No Country for Old Men". Bizarre, I had no interest in that film at all but really want to read this.
I'm thrilled that all of these titles are available at the library (yay!). That's what will be keeping me busy here and there. How about you, any film homework in the works?

Oh Happy Day!
Every February I look forward to this day, the day which I get to pick up the Film Review Year in Review Yearbook. I first got this back in 2001 (is that long enough ago to even say 'back in'?), when I was seriously getting into film due to taking a GenEd Film class while studying fashion. I missed the 2005 issue (grr!!), but otherwise have all issues since then and plan on always getting them.
It's a magazine from the UK, so the release dates are completely different than here in Canada, which is one reason I like to get the issues in succession. I also love that it doesn't feel the need to bow down to Hollywood films and says what is what. It goes without saying that it is a great resource for UK films. Out of all the reviews, I often add their 5/5 reviews to the every growing 'must see list'. There were only 27 5/5 reviews (excluding re-releases) so I think I'll consider picking out some of the 4/5's this year.It is also a great resource to hear about films that haven't gotten a lot of coverage here, this issue had 113 films I've never heard of which floored me considering I write about new releases every week!
It's one of the best days there is, I love to read though the reviews with tea and highlighter in hand, plotting and planning and listing away!

Film Fan Fridays for Friday February 1, 2008!
Hello Film Fans and Fanatics!
Welcome to Film Fan Fridays for Friday February 1, 2008! We have a lot to cover this week so let's get this party started!
First off we had the Genie nominations announced earlier this week. Topping the nominations are Shake Hands with the Devil and Eastern Promises both with 12 noms, including best picture. Rounding out the Best Motion Picture nominations are L'âge des ténèbres, Away From Her and Continental, un Film sans Fusil. I was surprized and delighted to realize that I have seen 4/5 of those nominations, whereas I've seen 0/5 of the Best Picture Oscar nominations. Full listings of Genie Nominations can be found here in various formats. Congratulations to all the nominees!
That takes us to this week's releases. As we fall into step with February, the romantic films walk along side us. Although both of this weeks romantic films appear to really be romantic comedies: Love and Other Dilemmas and Over Her Dead Body. I wonder if they will last until the 14th.
Our limited releases include the Canadian Love and Other Dilemmas and two music films: Honeydripper which looks rather charming and is set in Alabama in the 1950's, and we also have Joe Strummer: The Future is Unwritten a documentary focusing on the frontman to The Clash.
The wide releases this week include The Eye which is a remake of the 2002 Hong Kong film Gin gwai, and has some visual similarities to The Diving Bell and the Butterfly which is strange as The Eye is a horror flick, not a drama but they are both about sight. We also have Over Her Dead Body and Strange Wilderness which has an outdoor reality tv meets Mystery Science Theatre 3000 vibe to it.
Special Advance Screening
Up The Yangtze / 沿江⽽上, a documentary centred around the displacement of families due to the Three Gorges Dam megaproject in China.

Cloverfield
Dir: Matt Reeves (The Pallbearer)
Cast: T.J. Miller, Lizzy Caplan, Jessica Lucas, Michael Stahl-David, Mike Vogel
USA, 2008
Seen: January 22/08 at Scotiabank
Reason to see: Oh, the spectacle! But seriously, Jamie invited me.
Even though the previews for this film were very 'teaser' like and didn't give much away, I found myself actively trying not to think about what might happen next. For the most part that wasn't too hard because the film style and plot keep you constantly off balance between knowing almost nothing and then POW! visuals of everything and anything... what *is* that? It can't be.... it is!!! And so on and so forth. It's a pretty fun ride if you meet the strong resistant to nausea requirements, which luckily I did so I watched with wide open eyes and sometimes dropped jaw during the very loud screening.
Considering the setting and content, it does bring up the question of whether or not it is too soon after 9/11 for this type of film. So far, I've mostly seen people asking the question but not responding so maybe people are feeling ok about it.
Warning: For those whom are susceptible to nausea from shaky-can (a la Blair Witch Project), I would say you'd likely want to give this one a pass. There were walk outs during the screening I went to and it did give an unpleasant reaction to a fair number of people I've spoken to.
Shannon's Overall View:
It was certainly a film 'experience'
I'd not likely watch it again
If disaster films are your thing, you want to see this - in the theatre
roughly 10 minutes of preshow including 2 commercial and 6 previews: Step Up 2, Jumper, 10,000 BC, The Ruins, Star Trek and Iron Man.

28th Genie Award Nominations
Quite a stellar year for Canadian film! The majority of the nominations this year are for English films, and the front runners are Eastern Promises and Shake Hands with the Devil with 12 nominations each. There is a fair amount of crossover to Canada's Top Ten list (4 of the 10 are nominated) and a number of the categories have fierce competition. For example, check out the nominations for Best Director: Denys Arcand, Sarah Polly, David Cronenberg, Roger Spottiswoode and Bruce McDonald. Also, both lead acting categories are also jam packed with outstanding performance. The men: Roy Dupuis, Marc LaBrèche, Claude Legault, Viggo Mortensen and Gordon Pinsent. The women: Anne-Marie Cadieux, Julie Christie, Ellen Page, Molly Parker and Béatrice Picard. We can't leave out the zombie love, good thing Fido is here to represent!
The Genies will be held on March 3rd, 2008.

Film Fan Fridays for Friday January 25, 2008!
Hello Film Fans and Fanatics!
Welcome to Film Fan Fridays for Friday January 25, 2008! Here is another week of movie madness with not only Oscar nominations but ten new releases. Ten! But first a little about the Oscar nominations, the big contenders are: No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood both with 8 nominations closely followed by Atonement and Michael Clayton with 7 nominations each. Michael Clayton is reappearing in theatres this week so if you missed it originally you will have a chance to see it now! Add Juno to the list and those are the 5 nominations for best picture. Other multiple nominations go to Ratatouille (with 5), The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (with 4) and La Vie En Rose and Sweeney Todd: Demon Barber of Fleet Street both with 3 nominations. See various lists of nominations here.
I'm thrilled to say that this weeks releases include three Canadian films. Out of the three I am most excited about How She Move, set right here in Toronto and it's a dance movie. It's actually stepping, but I still consider that a dance movie. Very exciting! Additional Canadian releases include the drama/western All Hat which played at TIFF in 2007, and the creepy horror film They Wait.
Our limited releases outnumber the wide release by 6:4 this week. They include two highly acclaimed films: Still Life and The Rape of Europa - a documentary on what happened to works of art during WWII. We also have the black comedy Waiter which looks quite funny, a live action 3D concert film U2 3D as well as All Hat and They Wait.
The wide releases include How She Move, Meet the Spartans which is a parody on 300 with a gist of pop culture added in, Sylvester Stallone's latest revival project Rambo and the internet thriller Untraceable.
Touching base on last weeks releases: if you are considering seeing Cloverfield I would recommend seeing it before you hear too much about it and also to seeing it in the theatre. I would not recommend it if you have trouble with shaky-cam style filming (a la Blair Witch Project), there were walk outs during the screening I went to and I've also heard people complain of nausea. I didn't have this issue myself but it was very obvious that it affected people.
Have a great week!
Shannon

The Word is out - Oscar noms announced
Well, here we are on nomination day. I admit it was exciting to see the streaming live video of the announcement, even though it didn't start on time and only the big ones (acting, directing, film, writing) were shown. Of course the complete list was on the Oscar site very soon and all was good.
I am not surprized that both No Country For Old Men and There Will Be Blood head out the race with 8 nominations each, competing with each other in 6 categories. I still hold out that I'm not likely to see either which will make this Oscar race a bit of an odd one. I was surprized to see Michael Clayton with 7 noms, I barely know anyone who saw this it even though it received solid reviews. I am happy to see Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly pick up multiple awards, both films are excellent.
Congratulations to the numerous women writers who picked up nominations, Sarah Polley (Away From Her), Diablo Cody (Juno), Nancy Oliver (Lars and the Real Girl) and Tamara Jenkins (The Savages), this was delightful to see.
Setting a new bar for animated films, Ratatouille picks up 5 nominations (animated film, original score, sound editing, sound mixing and original screenplay). This is quite Oscar-forward as animated films only tend to get nods in song/score categories. Another history-in-the-making moment is saved for Norbit which is now a contender for both an Academy Award as well as multiple Razzie's.
Here are some of the hard the numbers
Total nominated films 58
Total films not including shorts: 44
Total films not including shorts, documentaries and foreign: 34
The challenge now is to see how many of the nominations can we see before showtime on Feb 24/08. I'm seen 14 total nominated films, but only 12 if you excluded shorts, docs and foreign. I gave those numbers and often it is hard to get an opportunity to see those films.
If you are also trying to get to see as many of the nominated films as possible, and live/have access to the Toronto area I have a few suggestions for you. Many of the films are playing in the big theatres but some of the hard to find ones are found at: Cumberland, The Carlton and The Bloor. For the chillier days if you don't want to go outside and have Rogers cable, TMN is currently showing Norbit, and the PPV/Rogers on Demand is showing Ratatouille, La Vie en Rose, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Surf's Up and Sicko.
Have a great Oscar season!

Feeling Nostalgic? Walk down memory lane and check out nominations and winners from last year
I am not surprized that both No Country For Old Men and There Will Be Blood head out the race with 8 nominations each, competing with each other in 6 categories.
